I didn't expect this to happen, but here we are:
After 20+ years in a 9-5, I finally learn to code! Oh the fun times that await.
This is not a decision I made lightly, I'm a busy guy with a young family so my time is no longer my own.
Just this morning my youngest son started Daddy's day with a poop that turned his cot into a crime scene… Leaving my beautifully laid plans in ruins. So believe me when I say this means a lot to make the time to do this.
Why I'm here
I’m here because there is there is a decentralized AI revolution and I want to take part.
I have always been an early adopter of new technology, heck I even bought my first Bitcoin in 2017 and then fumbled the bag like most people who didn't realize how good they had it.
I've also been through the mill with crypto and have seen a few cycles come and go, with in all honesty little to show for it. But when I stumbled on to Bittensor I knew this was something BIG.
In 2023 I explored and stepped away (multiple times) because this stuff is so difficult to understand in depth for anyone that is not a ML Engineer or PhD candidate.
But now I'm back for good.
In the knowledge that AI is eating the world, I want to contribute to a more hopeful future. Bittensor’s vision of open, decentralized AI aligns with my belief in democratizing technology (the original crypto vision).
I want to help build a future where anyone can contribute to AI innovation, not just big corporations.
I don't want Sam Altman knowing everything about me because I don't trust what he will do with that data.
And I don't care how hard it is, I'm going to make it work. This is how important it is to me.
What you're going to get from this newsletter
This newsletter will document my journey from zero to building on AI models for decentralized networks. I'll share my roadmap, progress, and contributions to Bittensor, whether it's mining on testnets, coding, or helping newcomers.
The commitment from me
Weekly newsletters here documenting my progress, successes and failures alike.
The roadmap
Phase 1: Foundational Knowledge.
Over the next 2-3 months, I’ll get to grips with Python and complete Kaggle projects to upskill fast in Data Science. Eventually, these skills may let me deploy a Bittensor miner and earn rewards for training AI models.
Phase 2: Machine Learning and Deep Learning, Bittensor-Specific Learning
In the following 3 months, I will aim to comfortably train and evaluate models, enter Kaggle competitions and document my approach, whilst enabling myself to articulate Bittensor's value proposition in simple terms (the true test of understanding!)
Phase 3: Bittensor Infrastructure Setup and Implementation
Following Bittensor's documentation to troubleshoot setup issues, help newcomers and contribute meaningfully to the ecosystem.
The takeaways
- Witness the messy (and rewarding?) experiences of learning to code
- Insights from a beginner's viewpoint interacting with the Bittensor ecosystem
- Real-world applications of applying learnings to decentralized AI
- Laugh at how far this newbie has to go in this complicated world
I’m documenting this journey to hold myself accountable and connect with others interested in decentralized AI. If you’re curious about Bittensor, learning to code, or just want to see if I’ll crash and burn, hit the ‘Subscribe’ button.
Thank you for being here at the start of what I hope will be an incredible journey.
Cheers,
Brian
